Abstract
This paper examines the economic impact of post-coup conflicts, particularly the responses to economic duress shaped by digital technologies within the Rakhine community of Myanmar. Specifically, it explores the potential and limitations of the digital careers emerging in Rakhine state, and the impacts of digital literacy on the future of this sector. This study intends to serve as a conversation starter for the Rakhine digital space and digital culture, and act as a reference for further digital studies in Rakhine state. The research shows the importance of digital literacy and the economic pathways it potentially opens for marginalized peoples. A number of policy action points are listed in the conclusion that are practical ways to further develop the digital economy in conflict or marginalized areas.
Editorial note: The research and writing of this paper occurred in mid-2023 during a time of relative stability for Rakhine state. Since that time, violent conflict has returned to the region.
