Bangkok, Thailand — The Centre on Gender and Forced Displacement (CGFD), an IDRC-supported centre at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), in partnership with Chiang Mai University, will host a one-day policy dialogue titled “Protection Frameworks and Displacement: Policy Dialogues for a Changing Region” at the Ambassador Hotel, Bangkok. The event will bring together senior policymakers, public figures, academics, civil society actors, and representatives from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) for substantive conversations on Myanmar refugee policy at a time of significant regional change. Taking recent policy developments in Thailand as a point of departure, the dialogue will reflect on tentative shifts toward regulated labour access for long-staying Myanmar refugees amid changing aid conditions and labour-market needs.
Discussions will situate these developments within the broader ASEAN context, examining how institutional norms, regional diplomacy, and geopolitics shape refugee governance. The programme is intended as a forum for exchange and deliberation, opening space for reflection on the balance between expedient policy responses and longer-term, rights-based commitments.
