Aye Lei Tun, a PhD candidate in the Political Science Department at McMaster University, Canada, has written an issue brief published on Stimson Center, a US think tank.
The piece “How International Funding Shapes Myanmar Pro-Democracy CSOs’ Activism in the Post-Coup Era” looks at challenges faced by civil society organisations in Myanmar due to the 2021 military coup, the impact and politics of international funding, and the effect of USAID support and its subsequent cuts.
The brief is based on her ongoing dissertation titled “Transnational Networks and Resilience of CSOs in Myanmar and Thailand.”
Aye Lei Tun is also researcher for international NGOs, focusing on Myanmar gender and media-related studies. She is also a novelist and previously worked as a journalist in Myanmar.
