The University of British Columbia’s (UBC) Myanmar Initiative is pleased to announce the UBC Myanmar Research Grant. We invite research proposals from Myanmar-focused students, scholars, and researchers. This grant aims to support emerging scholars and early career researchers from Myanmar, of Myanmar heritage, or working on Myanmar in creating new knowledge that contributes to democracy and democratization in Myanmar. We are excited to award up to five grants, each valued at a maximum of CAD 5,000. Additional funding may be considered for projects with high potential for academic or policy impacts.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicants must focus on Myanmar. Women and vulnerable minorities are especially encouraged to apply.
  • Currently enrolled in an MA or PhD program; postdoctoral fellows or other research affiliates will also be considered. Priority will be given to emerging scholars and early career researchers. The grant may be used to support program-related requirements, including dissertation or thesis.
  • Open to all disciplines, with preference for social sciences and humanities.

  • Conflict and Armed Actors
  • Elections and Political Parties
  • Political Philosophy and Religion
  • Federalism and Decentralization
  • Politics of Development and Civil Society
  • Human Rights and Rule of Law
  • Gender, Vulnerable Minorities, and Rohingya
  • Climate Change and Natural Resources

Requirements:

  • Present research proposals and findings at a virtual workshop with fellow grant recipients.
  • Maintain regular communication and provide updates on research projects to the UBC Myanmar Initiative.
  • Create a plan to publish research findings in academic journals, policy reports, or blogs/Op-Eds.
  • Actively participate in the activities of the UBC Myanmar Initiative.

Research Proposal Format – the two-page proposal should include the following items:

  • Description of research question and proposed methodological approach.
  • Description of how the research fits into an applicant’s research/academic program and how the applicant plans to publish/disseminate the outcomes.
  • Description of research needs and other research support.
  • Project timeline
  • Budget and justification.
  • Name and email address of two references who may be contacted by the selection committee.
