Background:

In an illegal coup three years ago, Myanmar’s military junta seized control of the country, orchestrating the arrest of civilian leaders. This disturbing turn of events marked a profound deviation from Myanmar’s previous trajectory toward democratic governance. The international community has closely monitored these developments, expressing deep concerns over the erosion of democratic institutions and the suppression of dissenting voices.

For three years  Myanmar has grappled with a full-scale military conflict between the Tatmadaw and resistance groups,  human rights abuses and a worsening humanitarian situation. Against this backdrop, democratic actors have maintained an alternative National Unity Government, legislative and consultative bodies and have continued a challenging journey towards mapping the path to a future inclusive democracy.

Despite the challenges, the resilience of the Myanmar people remains evident in their unwavering commitment to democratic values. Pursuing justice, human rights, and inclusive governance has become a rallying cry for the citizens who continue striving for a future free from oppression and autocratic rule.

As we reflect on these tumultuous three years, it becomes increasingly imperative for Canada and the global community to not just stand in solidarity with the people of Myanmar but continue and solidify tangible support to efforts to restore democracy and protect fundamental human rights.
