About The Thanakha International Gender E-Tekkatho (The Oxford Thanakha International)

(Research, Resources & Resolutions for Reform)

Everyone who visits to Burma/Myanmar is welcomed by people with Thanakha on their faces.  It is the cultural heritage of Myanmar and for the people of Myanmar, nothing is more organic, authentic and natural than Thanakha. Burmese, regardless of age, ethnicity, religion, gender, and socioeconomic background grind the bark of Thanakha trees with water on stone to adorn their faces believing it will rejuvenate, and protect their faces from outside harmful elements. This inclusive and democratic practice of cultural heritage symbolizes unity and resilience for the people of Myanmar. Using this conceptual metaphor of Thanakha, Thanakha Gender E-Tekkatho, (E-University), aims to support, strengthen, and sustain our women leaders and young people as informed decision-makers who are addressing structural inequality in Myanmar through transformative actions informed by anthropological research and localized knowledge production. Thanakha Gender Tekkatho is led by senior and prominent CDM Burmese female professors and anthropologists who are members of the Civil Disobedient Movement), women MPs as well as women leaders. They have MOUs with many universities and institutions including the Ministry of Women, Youth and Children, Women MP Network, and CDM. They aim to lead knowledge-based social change and gender equality in Myanmar.

Its founding Director is Dr Mar, former Convenor and Interim Director of International Gender Studies at the University of Oxford and the winner of ‘Excellence in Gender Research’ from the Australian Gender Institute.
